“We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies.”

- President Macron on the occasion of German Unity Day, 3 October 2025

Eurosky is building European infrastructure for the open social web - the foundation that lets startups create safer, fairer social media apps that users actually control, enabling European innovation to compete in the global digital economy.

The European social media market is worth tens of billions annually, with nearly all of it flowing to Big Tech. Eurosky will enable European startups to reclaim this market share while creating jobs, giving users control, protecting democratic discourse, and preventing the platform lock-in that created today's monopolies.

Our first Eurosky Live conference will take place in Berlin on 19 November 2025. The conference will explore the open social web and how Eurosky’s digital building blocks could power 'Trusted European Platforms'.

Eurosky Live sits alongside the French-German Digital Sovereignty Summit (18 Nov) and feeds into the preparation of the EU's Democracy Shield, as announced by President von der Leyen.

Join Us in Berlin

Eurosky Live will bring together policymakers, media leaders, investors, and founders to explore how open infrastructure can enable European innovation. You'll see live demos, meet the startups building on Eurosky, and hear from experts on the policy, business, and technical opportunities ahead.

Whether you're interested in digital sovereignty, media independence, startup opportunities, or the future of social technology, Eurosky Live will show you what's being built right now in Europe.

Agenda

  • Pamela Pompas Oreiro, iconomy

The opening to Eurosky Live, setting the stage for a day of critical conversations about Europe's digital future.

  • Robin Berjon (Eurosky); Sebastian Vogelsang (Eurosky / Flashes)

This session breaks down what AT Protocol and Eurosky are, explaining how these technologies could reshape the future of social media and the open social web. Learn how open, decentralized infrastructure can return control of data and identity to users and create real competition in the digital ecosystem. The session will also feature new features of Flashes, a visual-first social app that’s the launch partner for Eurosky’s infrastructure.

  • Heike Raab, Representative of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and Coordinator of the Broadcasting Commission of the German States

In this opening keynote, Heike Raab will address how sovereign digital infrastructure shapes Europe's public discourse and democratic resilience. As platform power increasingly concentrates control over media and information, she will explore the role regional and national governments must play in ensuring a fair, transparent, and accessible technological ecosystem.

  • Alexandra Geese (European Parliament); Felix Styma (iconomy); Brandi Geurkink (Coalition for Independent Technology Research); Moderated by Gauri Van Gulik (Better Politics Fund)

This panel explores how technology infrastructure can strengthen democratic participation, prevent platform manipulation, and foster more meaningful digital interactions. What could a new social contract for the web look like—one grounded in openness, accountability, and civic trust?

  • Boris Mann (AT Community Fund Lead)

The EuroCloud aims to build hardware infrastructure and cloud services, in order to host and build apps on top for EU citizens and the world. In the same way, the open AT Protocol provides building blocks from accounts, to personal storage, to custom data that powers apps from small to large. What are the opportunities for building the next generation of EU designed & hosted apps?

  • Anirudh Oppiliappan (Tangled)

Tangled is a code collaboration platform built on top of the AT Protocol. With a strong focus on decentralization and modern development workflows, Tangled makes collaborating on code more open, portable and user-owned - free from the constraints of centralized & siloed platforms.

  • Paul Nemitz (Visiting Professor of Law, College of Europe). Interviewed by Tobias B. Bacherle (Political Scientist)

Join Paul Nemitz, former Principal Adviser at the European Commission and key architect of EU digital regulation, for a candid discussion on building truly resilient technology ecosystems. In today's political climate, how do we balance innovation with democratic values? What frameworks can ensure digital sovereignty, fair competition, and accountability? Nemitz brings decades of policy experience to this timely conversation about governing our technological future.

  • Tyler Fisher (Sill)

Sill is an innovative news and information discovery platform integrating with Bluesky and Mastodon. It watches your timelines across the open social web and shows you the most popular links in your network. Sill users love it for its time-saving capabilities, reducing the need to doomscroll to keep up with the news. It opens the door for more informed discovery and a potentially more trustworthy news experience.

  • Jen Mitchell (Gander)

Fun and trusted social media, where people aren’t the product. Gander Social is a Canadian-built and hosted, values-driven social media platform designed to offer a safer, saner, and more accountable alternative to the big, foreign owned, platforms.

  • Philipp Schild (Funk); Catherine Tait (New_Public); Robert Amlung (ZDF); Sander van der Waal (Waag); Moderated by Ivan Sigal (FreeOurFeeds)

A discussion on how interoperable infrastructure like AT Protocol can reinvent media’s relationship with audiences, breaking down platform monopolies and preserving journalistic independence. Panelists will explore how European publishers can reduce platform dependency, protect editorial control, and build distribution infrastructure aligned with democratic values and data sovereignty.

  • Jutta Horstman (Heinlein Group)

Fresh from the Digital Sovereignty Summit, Jutta Horstmann connects Europe's push for digital independence to the emerging open social web. She'll explore why open protocols and Open Source software build the essential infrastructure for achieving digital sovereignty in practice.

  • Bryan Newbolt (Bluesky); Robin Berjon (Eurosky)

Bluesky has grown to over 40 million users, proving decentralized social media can work at scale. Join Bryan Newbold, Protocol Engineer at Bluesky, for a candid conversation about what they've learned building the AT Protocol - and the insights and lessons for Europe's digital future.

  • Enrico Graziani (Eurosky)

CoCoMo (Commons for Content Moderation) is a foundational component for Eurosky. It will provide a shared moderation system for developers and startups building applications on top of ATProto.

  • Mathew Lowry (ATConnect)

Bluesky and the ATmosphere give many organisations a unique opportunity: integrate high-value, troll-free conversations within the global Bluesky network with your own online community. But juggling your peoples' accounts and PDSs, plus labels, lists & custom feeds, is complex. ATConnect makes it simple by integrating the ATmosphere with your HR and IT systems.

  • Rose Wang (Bluesky); Christophe Leclercq (Europe MédiaLab); Erik Bugge (Kobler); Moderated by Sherif Elsayed-Ali (Eurosky)

A strategic exploration of the business models and economic opportunities emerging from decentralized technologies.

About Eurosky

Eurosky provides the infrastructure that European startups need to build social web applications. By handling the foundational layer, Eurosky makes it cheaper and faster for startups to launch and scale, enabling multiple companies to compete across social media, news, search, e-commerce, and more.

Built on the AT Protocol, Eurosky ensures users keep control of their data and networks. If they switch apps, they don't lose their connections or content. This prevents the platform lock-in that created today's monopolies and enables genuine competition.

Eurosky is an independent, non-profit, public interest initiative.
